On August 17th, 1943, following an infamous 12 o’clock high attack by German fighters, Sgt. James Tolbert bailed out of a B17 bomber nicknamed “Dear Mom” that exploded over a Belgian village. Tolbert narrowly survived the jump, saying, “a [German] fighter made a turn for me as I was hanging in my chute, and flew by me and dipped his wings. The dip is a sign of respect, or a salute.” He suffered an injured ankle and broken jaw. The local townspeople attempted to protect Tolbert, but he was soon captured by the Germans and interned as a prisoner of war. A complete catalog of his letters home are preserved.
Tolbert’s time in training, his service with the 94th bomb squadron, and his internment as a prisoner of war are all personally chronicled. Tolbert’s legacy of service has been meticulously archived. Tolbert became an Emsworth resident and all of his family has made their home here. His daughter, Mrs. Alice Cahill, had a career as Avonworth High School’s secretary.
Brady will also describe the archival process to equip others with the knowledge and skills to archive and preserve their family history. The lecture will include compelling visuals, videos and detailed anecdotes and information.
